Georgii Cherkin performs Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Movement II, with the Cantus Firmus Orchestra conducted by Grigor Palikarov.
for Piano & Symphony Orchestra
Georgii Cherkin · Piano · Cantus Firmus Orchestra · Grigor Palikarov, conductor
About the arrangement
Between the sonata’s stillness and storm, the Allegretto moves with poised, almost weightless grace. Georgii Cherkin preserves Beethoven’s original piano part while woodwinds, horns, trombones and strings exchange its phrases in translucent colours, turning the brief middle movement into an intimate orchestral conversation.
The orchestration follows the movement’s graceful contrasts with a light touch. Colours pass naturally between the instrumental groups while the piano retains the poise and clarity of Beethoven’s original conception.
